Questions people ask

Do I have to pay to file the FAFSA?

No. The FAFSA is free at studentaid.gov—the first F stands for Free. Any site that charges to file it for you isn't the official one.

Should I take out loans?

Borrow only for the gap that grants, scholarships, savings, and earnings don't cover, and take federal loans before private ones—they carry fixed rates and more protections. A rough rule: keep total borrowing under what your first-year pay in the field would be.

What if my family can't help pay?

The FAFSA still determines federal aid based on your situation, and many adults file as independent students. Grants, work-study, employer help, and state programs can all close the gap without family contributions.
